    Correct use of 'got'

Can I write "He used the money he got to pay for his rent"? Or must it be "He used the money he got from selling the newspapers to pay for his rent" if the reader already knows that he got the moeny from selling newspapers?

'He used the money he got' is fine if the reader already knows the context.

Agreed that it's fine to use "got" as you describe, but one minor point............

He'd use the money to "pay his rent". In the UK, we pay rent, we don't pay for rent.
