Question how to ask a question?

    Hi all,

Q: When did your doctor say patients can start to dive into sea ?
Answer 1: The doctor say after 3 months, patients can start to dive.

Is the question phrase in a correct way?

or can the answer to the question be:
Answer 2: On 1st Aug, the doctor said that patient can dive.

Which is the correct answer if someone ask this question?

How should I ask if I want to get the reply to be answer 1?

Sorry for asking so many questions.

Re: how to ask a question?

    Hello copy83

    Try,

Q: When did your doctor say (that) patients could start deep-sea diving?
    A1: After 3 months.
A2: He said it on August 1st.
The answer depends on the context: the sentence(s) that came before the question.

You need to be careful of ambiguity.
Soup has assumed you mean that the doctor said it on August 1. I think you mean that the doctor said that the patient could dive on (after) August 1.
Answer 1:The doctor say after 3 months, patients can start to dive. could also be read that you had to wait for 3 months before the doctor said that the patients can start to dive.
You should write: The doctor said that patients can start to dive after 3 months.
You can avoid ambiguity by removing the commas, using 'that', and re-ordering the words.

    Thank you for comment.

I was thinking if it is possible to have two answers to the question.
The first answer is patient have to wait for three months.
The second answer is the doctor said it on August 1st.

How do I phrase the question so that I have only one answer to it?
    Is it possible?

Question [1] is ambiguous: two answers are possible given more context (Ray didn't see that at the time). Question [2] is not ambiguous: just the one answer is possible.

[1] When did the doctor say they can dive?

    • (He said that they can dive) After 3 months.
    • (He said it) On August 1st.

[2] What did the doctor say ... ?

    • He said that they can dive after 3 months.

To get the answer "August 1st", ask:

    • What date was it when the doctor said ... ?

    OK, I'll bite. What didn't I see?
I've made only one post in which I pointed out that sentence 1 was ambiguous.
Now, you are stating that I didn't see that sentence 1 was ambiguous.
    What can you mean?
