for the look of the thing

I don't understand the meaning of "for the look of the thing" and "profitable speculation" of the following sentence:

He often wished, for the look of the thing, that people would sometimes burn candles at his shrine; but as they had forgotten who he was it was not considered a profitable speculation to pay him that attention.

    My questions:

1 What does "for the look of the thing" mean?
2 Does "a profitable speculation" mean "a good guess"?

    Thank you in advance
