"was stricken with folio" or "was stricken by folio"

    Dear teachers,

Would you be kind enough to tell me which of the following two sentences is grammatical?

Franklin D. Roosevelt was stricken with polio at his summer home on the Canadian island of Campobello.

    or

Franklin D. Roosevelt was stricken by polio at his summer home on the Canadian island of Campobello.

    Thank you for your efforts.

    Regards,

    V.
