    Tefl course - conditionals

    Hello,

I am doing an online tefl course and having real difficulty understanding present, first, second and third conditionals. I have tried the activity a number of times and feel like i'm guessing more than anything else. I have read up about it online, and in grammar books and still not fully understanding it. Below are a list of sentences that I have put in what I think is the correct conditional.

    Present conditional
If you boil water, it turns to steam

    First conditional
If i win the competition, I'll share the prize money with you
If the weather is nice tomorrow, I'll go to the beach
If you scratch my car, I'll give you a smack
If you touch the fire, you'll get burned
If you pay for me, I'll go to the cinema with you
If you save money now, you'll have enough to travel to Spain next month
If you come near my house again, I'll kill you
If you put your hand in the cage, the lion will bite you
If you see Catherine, will you let me know?
If it rains, I'll go to the cinema
If Martin comes in, will you give me a call
If you are good to people, then people will be good to you in return
If you don't stop playing with my computer, you'll break it

    Second conditional
If I could speak Spanish, I would be able to talk to people here in Spain
If i were you, I'd talk to your girlfiriend about it

    Third conditional
If only I had treated Yuki better, she wouldn't have left me
If only I had learned to speak Spanish, I would be able to order beer when i was in Spain last month

As far as I understand it is second conditional when you use modal verb would making it a hypothetical situation. But I am unsure about whether some of the sentences I put as first conditional are actually hypothetical?

Please Help, advice / corrections, even if it is just telling me which ones i got right.

    Thanks

    Re: Tefl course - conditionals

    Hi,
I think you got all of them them right.

The table below might help you to understand it better

PRESENT CONDITIONAL (sometimes called the ZERO CONDITIONAL)
    IF + PRESENT / PRESENT

    1st CONDITIONAL
    IF + PRESENT / FUTURE

    2nd CONDITIONAL
    IF + PAST / WOULD + INFINITIVE

    3rd CONDITIONAL
IF + PAST PERFECT / WOULD + HAVE + PAST PARTICIPLE

    Good luck!
