If I may say so, thatís a scary image.

    Hello.

Ai: So you cooked in the dark?

Naomi: I did. There was a power cut but I really wanted to cook. So I shouted to the air, ďBlackout! Eat your hat!Ē and cut vegetables and cooked in the dark.

Ai: If I may say so, thatís a scary image.

Naomi: It must be. My eyes finally got used to the dark, so the dish was very tasty.

Ai: It sounds like the power cut is helping you develop new skills.

Is "If I may say so ..." interchangeable with "In my view ..." or "In my opinion ..."?

    Thank you.

Yes, you can use those phrases in place of "if I may so". However, the meaning is not precisely the same. Saying "if I may say so" is sort of like asking for permission, with the implication that what follows is your opinion or your view. Also, of course, using the phrase "if I may say so" is more polite and more gentle than simply saying "in my opinion" or "in my view".

    With your permission to speak freely, I think that's . . .

If you will allow me to speak frankly, I find that . . .

    If it's OK with you that I speak honestly, I think that's . . .

And moving towards the less polite end of the spectrum:

If we can talk man to man, I believe ....
    If I can call a spade a spade, I think ...
If we can drop this politeness act, I reckon ... (Not recommended for beginners)
If we can cut the crap, you should ... (Not really recommended at all)
