    I wish to obtain clarity on the usage of preposition on and in.
    Is it acceptable to start one's sentence with a preposition.

    Welcom to the forum. Preposition is a very tricky and important part of speech in English language. You need a lot practice and study on the use of appropiate preposition in a sentence. Then only you can have clarity. There are a number free grammar sites on the Web dealing with preposition. You can easily find out one or two good sites through Google search.

    As regards your second question, Yes, you can start a sentece with a preosition. Flowing are few examples:
    In which year did Marconi invent wireless and telegraphy?
    On which day we celebrate the youth day?
    According to Jane, the banana is inside the box. (according to is a prepositional phrase)
