    state control

The country has a long history of state control.
What does it refer to by 'state control' here?
What kind of country could it be? Scandinavian countries?
    Thanks.

'State control' means control by the government, this can take many forms, control of industry, the economy, railways, health care etc. It is usually associated with socialist or communist countries. It is a personal opinion whether you see this as a positive thing or not.
