    "the"

    my friend told me yesterday that the article "the " can not be used at the begining of this sentence :""the man should be older than the woman""
    but se didnot give me any explanation abgout it, so, would you like to help me ,with simple examples pleaaaase!!!

    If you're talking about a particular man and woman, then it's okay to use the definite article. If you're talking about a general situation, then you use the indefinite article.

    Of course it can, in the right context. For example:

    In most parts of the world, traditional marriages generally have several characteristics. The man should be older than the woman. The man should earn money to support the family. The woman should care for the children. Of course, times are changing.

    I am referring to one representative man and one representative woman in a traditional marriage. No problem.

    Tell your friend that it is perfectly OK to use "the" in that context, and refer him to this website.
