    bring in from the cold

    Hi!

Please give me a hint about the meaning of this phrase:

The death of Franco.... sparked a remarkable process that brought Spain in from the cold...

I have seen that the same phrase is used in newspaper articles about isolated or underdeveloped countries, but I need to know with certainty what is the idea behind it.

    Thanx!

If a country is "brought in from the cold" it means that they are accepted into the international community after having been isolated for certain reasons, usually to do with their political system, as in the case of Spain.
