    hi there everybody,
    "if you would perfect your body, guard your mind" james allen
    I would like to know the use of would in the sentence above.
    is it used as a piece of advice?

    yes it is a kind of advice, or even better, it describes the result of body perfection ,which is to lose your mind over the pleasures of the flesh. The writer's advice is to avoid that.
    At least this is how I understand it. You can compare my expalnation to the rest of your text.

    Here "if you would" means "If you want to...", "If you would like to...", "If your goal is to...", "Se vorrebbe ..."
    It means "If you intend to perfect your body, you also need mental discipline". That is, you need willpower to eat properly, exercise, not smoke, etc.
    Yes, it's a piece of advice that James Allen apparently gave.
