    Cool Oversmart

    Hi,

Does this term oversmart/over smart exist?

    He is oversmart.
(for a person who is acting to be very smart)

Is the above statement correct and is it used by native speakers?
What would a native speaker say to convey the same thought.

    Thanks

No....no such word exists. You could say somebody is overly smart, however. That's about the closest thing we have to that.

The contexts for the following phrases vary, but they at least live in the same general neighborhood:

Someone is too smart for their britches.
Someone is too smart for their own good.
    Someone is a smartypants.
    Someone is an egghead.
Someone is using fifty-dollar words. (I always liked this one.)
Someone is a whiz / whiz kid / brain.
Someone is as sharp as a tack / razor.

    Hope this helps.

    Greg
