    What is the usage of thereby?
    It seems that it can introduce a present particicle,right?

    Present participle?

    It means 'in that manner', 'by that means': 'I dropped my teeth, thereby breaking them'. But a present participle is not a requirement: 'I dropped my teeth, and thereby lost my girlfriend'.
