    Question Furry?

    Hi dear teachers!

Which animals can be called furry animals? Are cows and buffalos included in the list?
    What exactly is fur?

    Thanks.

    Re: Furry?

Fur is the thick coat of soft hair covering the skin of a mammal, such as a fox or beaver.

I have some names of furry animals: polar bear, platypus, prairie dog, and maybe tigers as well.....

An animal which has longish, soft hair can be called furry - cats are furry, dogs are sometimes furry {puppies usually are], rabbits are furry, a horse in its winter pelt can be furry.

Cows and buffalo are definitely not furry. They have close set hairs in their coat.

Yes, it's usuallya question of what we find cute. Furry means hairy+fluffy+cute.

    Re: Furry?

You'd also have to add all animals that the fur industry uses: minks, ermines, chinchillas, and other weasel family members.

    Re: Furry?

The guideline many scientists use is "how many layers of hair does the animal have?"

    Layer One:
*Primary hair which is longer and coarser to protect the mammal's skin.

    Layer Two:
*Secondary hair which is fluffy to repel water and regulate body temperature.

Humans, horses, cows, zebras, and camels (to name a few) only have Layer One, so their covering is referred to as "hair."

Dogs, cats, skunks, minks, and squirrels (again, to name just a few) have Layer One and Layer Two, so their covering is called "fur."
