    become confinement

    Hi!
Can anybody explain what the following underlined sentences mean?

But most people acquire most of their knowledge outside school, and in school only insofar as school, in a few rich countries, has become their place of confinement during an increasing part of their lives.

    Disclaimer:I'm no teacher

It means that in some rich countries, people are forced to spend more and more time of their life in school and accordingly are bound to learn some knowledge there.

It also carries the implication that school is a confining experience, preventing the person from acquiring a broader knowledge than mere book-learning.
