    Confusion in of/for

    Hi

Sometime I get confused in use of "of and for". For example :

    1. Please recall our discussion regarding submission of XYZ drawings.

    2. Please recall our discussion regarding submission for XYZ drawings.

In above sentense 1 and 2 which one is correct and why?

Please note that “of” and ‘for’ are both prepositions have wide applications. So to pin point where to use which one or what is the appropriate preposition, in a nutshell is difficult. However since any preposition establishes a relationship of a noun or pronoun(called object of the preposition) with another word of the sentence and once we identify that word in the sentence, the problem becomes easy.
In the example sentences the noun “XYZ drawing” which is the object of the preposition is related to the word “submission”. So you have to find the appropriate preposition by asking question, the same you determine the object in a sentence, as: submission of what? of submission for whom? You get a natural answer, submission of XYZ drawing and not submission for XYZ drawing.

    Re: Confusion in of/for

Sarat, thanks for attempt. But still I am not clear. Is there any definite rule for using of these preposition in these type of sentenses. Let me furnish more example :
    1. Design data and construction specification of/for housing society.
    2. Colours of/for walls shall be dark blue.
    3. Access platform of/for building shall be made by mild steel.
    4. Interlocking of/for process shall be displayed on computer.
I would be thankful, If somebody can explain.

    1. Design data and construction specification of/for housing society. In either case here you need the definite article before "housing society" "of the housing society" means belonging to the housing society. "For the housing society" means "intended for" or "done for" the housing society.
    2. Colours of/for walls shall be dark blue. "The colour of the walls shall be blue" means the walls will be blue. The colour for the walls shall be blue" means the colour that you put on the walls shall be blue.
    3. Access platform of/for building shall be made by mild steel.
    4. Interlocking of/for process shall be displayed on computer.
