    in one's own effort

"he was eager to return to a more entrepreneurial role in which he had a big financial stake in his own efforts"

I'm not really sure what this "own efforts" would mean.

did he mean that he wanted to return to a more entrepreneurial role by his power only? or does the "own efforts" describe the "financial stake"?

    I would say:
'A large amount of money invested in his work (his own efforts), not the work of someone else'.
