    girlfriend x girl friend

When do we use 'girlfriend' as one sole word and when do we use it as two distinct words 'girl friend'? Any rules?

The same question applies to 'boyfriend' and 'boy friend'.

The single word indicates an attachment; the double word indicates friendship.

I used to think that some time ago. However I have seem its usage with a double connotation so frequently that I got confused. Thank you for your explanation regarding the correct usage.

It is worth noticing that such distinction is very difficult in spoken English.
I mean I guess in everyday speaking the forms "girl friend" and "girlfriend" overlap.

Right - that is where the context is needed to confirm what is meant.
I think too that in speech it will be something along the lines of "She is a girl friend // one of my girl friends" for a friend, and "She is my girlfriend" for a romantic attachment.
