    composition x essay

In a ESL class, say intermediate level, a teacher asks the students to write a text about a specific topic, expressing their opinions, at home, and bring it next class.

What is the most appropriate term here to describe the students's writing?
    - a compositon?
    - an essay?
    - a writing?
    - a redaction?
    or something else?

PS Feel free to correct any mistakes in this post

When I was at secondary school 150 years ago the term "composition" was used, in later studies it was "essay" and this is the term I always use.

I still call it a composition, unless it really is an essay.

It was a composition when I was at school too, but generally these days it's an essay.

That is really interesting. Several years ago (but less than 150), when I was a teenager, my ESL teachers (non-native ones) used to call it composition. Then I stopped learning English for some years. Nowadays, as an ESL teacher, I heard some non-native colleagues calling it essay. So I guess that change reached the ESL users quite quickly.
