    Appropriate use of "delving"

    Hello all,

I'm writing an introduction to a subject, but I need to write a motivation for it before getting into formal definitions. Essentially, I have something along these lines:

"Subject X is crucial, because X (...). But before delving into it, we need to consider some examples."

My question: Is the use of 'delving' appropriate for this situation? It was the first verb that crossed my mind, but I'm not sure if it's meant to be used in this kind of situations, i.e., as in "before discussing the details of this matter".

If you don't think it's appropriate, I'd love to hear any suggestions for making this transition from a "short definition of a matter" => transition and "motivation with examples" => "long/formal definition of the matter".

    Thank you in advance.

    Delving is fine there.
