What is the grammar with this sentence?

    Hi every body,

I've read this sentence but I didn't understand what it meant and what was the grammar of its? Please help me.
Wolf, meeting with a Lamb astray from the fold, resolved not to lay violent hands on him, but to find some plea to justify to the Lamb the Wolf's right to eat him.
    Thank you very much.

I think the phrase that troubles you here is "meeting with a Lamb astray from the fold". Is this correct?

It's an adverbial phrase that modifies "Wolf resolved not to lay violent hands on him". In this sentence, such an adverbial phrase can cause some confusion because it separates the subject of the clause it modifies from its verb. One could say that a more typical word order is this:

Meeting with a Lamb astray from the fold, Wolf resolved not to lay violent hands on him, but to find some plea to justify to the Lamb the Wolf's right to eat him.

We could also say that "meeting with a Lamb astray from the fold" is a reduction of "after meeting ...", "while meeting ...", or "having met ...". The full context of the story would tell us which one it is: after meeting, while meeting, having met.

This adverbial phrase can also be turned back into an adverbial clause.

After he met with a Lamb astray from the fold, Wolf resolved ...
When he met with a lamb astray from the fold, Wolf resolved ...
