The mantle of a position refers to all of the responsibilities and duties that must be fulfilled by someone in that position. It is a rather formal word.

A mentor is someone who teaches or trains someone and gives them a lot of wise advice over a period of time; a trusted guide or friend. Often this word is used to refer to someone who takes an active interest in furthering someone's career; they guide that person's development, presumably because they see potential in them and want to help them get ahead. It is also a rather formal word.

So putting two and two together, we have:

The mantle of a mentor: all the duties and responsibilities that go along with teaching and advising someone and guiding their professional development.

Ex. "After John graduated from MIT, he went to work for Microsoft. His supervisor recognized John as a gifted programmer, and so he assumed the mantle of a mentor and took John under his wing. He took a special interest in John's professional development, giving him opportunities to work on software projects that were usually the province of more senior programmers."
