    a medical attest ??

An employee misses a workingday at his job.
Next day, he appears with a sheet of paper, signed by a doctor, testifying he had been ill the previous day, in order to justify his absence.

How is that sheet of paper called in English?
    a medical certificate?
    a medical attest?
    something else?

PS Feel free to correct any mistakes in this post

    Re: a medical attest ??

In AmE, that piece of paper has a very non-technical sounding name - we simply call it a "doctor's note."

    Examples:
"You won't be paid for your absence unless you bring in a doctor's note."

    "I swear I really was sick, Boss - here's my doctor's note."

Doctor: "Here's a prescription for an antibiotic, and I want you to stay home and rest for at least 48 hours."
Patient: "OK, but can you please give me a doctor's note that I can give to my boss?"

In BrE "a medical certificate", but I have heard "doctor's note" as well.
