    need help with tenses

By the time Columbus arrived in America, a million or more Native Americans from Twenty-two different cultural groups had already lived in the Americas. These groups spoke Some two thousand different languages and had already formed very sophisticated societies . For example, the Maya used an accurate calender and complex alphabet. They also developed irrigation systems. Many Native Americans had used very advanced farming methods for a long time before Columbus arrival.

    Re: need help with tenses

It looks good and all the tenses are used correctly. But what's the question? what do you need help on?

-Can't we use the simple past in this sentence for repeated action in the past like this:
Many Native Americans used very advanced farming methods for a long time before Columbus arrival.

In BrE it would be correct to say: Many Native Americans had been using very advanced farming methods for a long time before Columbus arrival.
Or: Many Native Americans used very advanced farming methods before Columbus arrival. But this last implies that they had stopped using these methods before Columbus arrived.

I totally agree with bhaisahab. By extension, I might submit that the simple tenses usually answer questions that start with “who”, “when”, “where”, “what” and “why”. Perfect tenses usually answer the questions “how many”, “how much” and “how long” (perfect progressive). Since you stated, “for a long time”, it makes sense to me that you would use the past perfect progressive.

    Hope it helps!
