I think hell can not go with good, it is a place of suffering, punishment and separation from God. We sometimes utter "It is hell of a thing" when something unexplainably bad happens. So how can a hell be a good read?

    Yes, it's correct.

We had a hell of a good time on our last ski trip.

You could also say "one hell of a good time".

The expression is "hell of a ___". Other adjectives and nouns can come at the end.
