    tautology

    Does the following sentence contain a tautology?

    On the other hand, the requirement that this restriction on the scope of those provisions must remain limited to its proper objective suggests that...

    Is "must" redundant?

    Yes, I think it is tautological, 'must' here is reduntant. However I don't see any problem using this sentence just the way it is - the 'must' emphasizes the requirement. On the other hand, without 'must' the sentence looks somewhat more formal.

    I agree the sentence is correct. Some people might consider "must" superfluous. However, to be critical of this is really nitpicking in my opinion.
