    I didn't have to be an extraordinarily intelligent (female) to work out what was going on.

    Actually, this is a bit of a joke, since it seems that rocket surgeon is a combination of two phrases. We say someone is a rocket scientist and also a brain surgeon to suggest that they are highly intelligent (or an idiot, depending the context of the sentence).
