    She lifted her hands, stroking one of her fingernails like a tiny pet.

    Can you explain me this sentence with basic english?

    She raised her hands, stroking one of her fingernails as if it were a small domestic animal. (A tiny cat or dog).
    She was touching her fingernail as if it were a small pet.

    Picture, for instance, that your finger nails are a bit long-ish. Some folks with nails like this develop a habit of stroking, say, the index finger nail of the left hand with the fingers of the right hand. They'll rub the nail from the cuticle to the tip, much the way they'd stroke a cat from neck to tail. It's a habit that is somehow soothing, one that folks might use unconsiously while pondering or thinking.
