    "Goodbye Girl' by David Gates"

The song "Goodbye Girl' by David Gates" with parts of the lyrics as follow:

I know you've been taken, afraid to hurt again.
You fight the love you feel for me instead of giving in.
But I can wait forever, a helping you to see
That I was meant for you and you for me.

May I know what are the meanings of the above phrases in red?
I understand some lyrics may not be in proper grammer, but I just want to know what it implies.

    Tks / ju

Re: "Goodbye Girl' by David Gates"

I know you've been taken, afraid to hurt again.
I think this is the expression "to be taken" meaning "to be swindled or deceived, to be tricked, or scammed or fooled."

Maybe it comes from "being taken for a ride" - which also means to be tricked or swindled (by a taxi driver who takes you the long way to your destination in order to run up the fare.) He "takes you for a ride" in order to swindle you.

The meaning of the line seems to be "I know that you've been fooled before, and now you're afraid of feeling hurt again."

You fight the love you feel for me instead of giving in.
"Giving in" in this case means "yielding" to the love she feels.
The idea is that he tells her, "You really love me, but you are fighting it. Just allow the feeling to be in you. Yield to the love you have for me."

But I can wait forever, a helping you to see
That I was meant for you and you for me.

This is a reference to the romantic notion that "Fate" or "destiny" or "the gods" have had this relationship in mind all along. Thus two people are "meant for each other" by the will and wish of a Higher Power. It means that they are a perfect and fore-ordained match, a "match made in Heaven." It says that this relationship was "meant to be."
