    Thumbs down questions about tenses

1.I (want) __________________ to be a doctor until I was fifteen.
The answer is “had wanted” because “want” here expressed a “wish - I used to want to be a doctor before I was fifteen”. Am I correct? Thanks. Is “wanted” OK?

2.He (live) __________________ in Durban for a year before he got married.
The answer is “had lived?” not “lived – simple past?” Am I correct? Thanks.

3.I (have) __________________ trouble sleeping all last week.
The answer is “had” not “have had” because this sentence refers to the past only. Am I correct? Thanks.

Is “wanted” OK? Yes, you don't need "had".

Simple past is okay too. Some say that with two past actions, the first action should be expressed with perfect tense, but not all agree.

3.I (have) __________________ trouble sleeping all last week.
The answer is “had” not “have had” because this sentence refers to the past only. Am I correct? yes
My answers reflect the perspective of a North American English speaker. British speakers are more fond of perfect tense.

The simple past is appropriate for all of these sentences.
For sentences like 2. you only need the past perfect if you are attributing some significance to the difference in time between the two events. For example, "He had only lived in Durban for a year before he met a nice girl, got engaged and married her".
