    I would like to know the difference between "1" and "2".
    1. He should be here by now - something must have happened to him.
    2. He should have been here by now - something must have happened to him.

    "He should be here by now":we are here, this person (he) should be here with us now.
    "He should have been here by now": we are here, this person (he) should have been here at some point in time before now, it is not necessary that he should be here with us now. Imagine, for example, a postman or delivery man.

    To me, in 1 the person is not very late. In 2, the person is long overdue.
