    invoke

    Hello,

I was looking at the definition of "invoke" and the definition is as follows:

cite or appeal to (someone or something) as an authority for an action or in support of an argument

appeal to someone as an authority means appeal to an authority? or an authority makes an appeal?
    Thank you.

    Re: invoke

It means we are talking about the authority, to justify our point.

"I believe there is an inherent language learning device in the brain, as Chomsky proposed"
    This is me invoking Chomsky.
This is me citing Chomsky as an authority.
"An appeal to Chomsky" in this sense, means referring to him as an authority to support my argument, not "appeal" in the sense of asking him something.
