    better, top-ranked

How do you refer to the top-ranked students?

In our state, a common entrance test is held for about 200000 MBA graduate aspirants. This year, about 150000 qualified to be admitted into different institutions. All the 150000 students are ranked by the score they get in the examination. Our institution is given 120 students from the 150000 qualified students. Due to certain circumstances, this year our institution got better-ranked students than ever before. How to refer to those better-ranked students? higher-ranked, top-ranked, first-ranked?

I would say "our top-ranked students fared better than ever."
