    Question Looking for a noun...

    Hi everybody,

What's the name for the guy in places such as a garrison, whose job is to put out food among soldiers? (he's not a chef assisstant, but the one whose name is put on a rota)...and, is the verb "put out" right for this context? Thanks in advance...

It's to serve, and it would be the cook or the cook's assistant, maybe even the quartermaster.

The "mess sergeant" is the one in charge of producing the soldiers' meals.
Mess Sergeant - What does MESSSGT stand for? Acronyms and abbreviations by the Free Online Dictionary.
(scroll down the whole page to see if there is other information you can use.)
    - But the mess sergeant is not on a rota. That is his fixed job.

KP (which stands for "kitchen police") duty was rotated among the GIs, except when a soldier was given extra KP as a punishment.

Possibly "prepare" food would be a better term for the making of the food, and "serve, distribute, dish out" for giving a serving to each soldier.

There may be Army slang terms for these functions, but I don't know of any.
