    to pretend to something

I donīt pretend to much expertise in the matters.
What does pretend to sth mean? How common is this expression in everyday English? Could anybody contextualize a situation in which I can use it?

To pretend to knowledge or expertise in something means to claim to have that knowledge/expertise. It is very formal and very rarely used in everyday English. I wouldn't advise using it, you could appear to be trying to be "clever" or pompous.

You could actually be accused of being "pretentious".
