    what does it mean?

Hi. I am trying to translate a book. I could not understand what the author means here:

He was just a crazy Indian who parlayed a good passing arm, dark eyes and his nuttiness into a new religion.

'to parlay a passing arm' ? What do you think he means?

    Thanks in advance.

I think it means that the Indian was good at football (he had a "good passing arm') and he used that skill to his advantage (he "parlayed" it)

I think it means that he cashed in on -or- made the most of -or- made something good out of -- a talent for playing football.
