    Dear dogge:

'When he married her, he neglected to mention that he had had five wives before her.' (Describes an action in the past that took place before another action in the past.)

'I have had many strange dreams before, but this latest one is the strangest of all.' (Used to talk about experiences in the past from the perspective of the present)

'She has had four manuscripts accepted for publication.'

They are examples of the past and present perfect tenses.

    I hope this is helpful,

    Petra

Using "have" with other verbs (including the very same verb "to have" !! )
makes this one of the "perfect" tenses.
    ENGLISH PAGE - Present Perfect

"I have seen this lesson before" is structurally the same as
"I have had this lesson before."
    (present perfect first person)

"He has never tasted tacos" is structurally the same as
    "He has never had tacos."
    (present perfect third person)

"Until the time my brother developed asthma, we had owned dogs" is the same as
"Until the time my brother developed asthma, we had had dogs."
    (past perfect)
