    tell me the difference

    Two sentences make me confusing.
Do they have a different semantic meaning?

    1. She insisted that we stay at home
    2. She insisted that we stayed(had stayed) at home

Do they have different meanings? yes

    1. She insisted that we stay at home ...refers to the past, present or future
    She want(ed)(s)us to stay home.
    2. She insisted that we stayed(had stayed) at home ...refers to the past
Someone else thought that we had gone out, but she said 'No, we stayed at home that time.'

    1. She insisted that we stay at home

I wanted to go to the movies, but she insisted that we stay at home and do our chores instead. So there I was, stuck cleaning my room.

    2. She insisted that we stayed(had stayed) at home

I was trying to remember when we went to the beach. I thought it was last weekend, but my sister disagreed. She insisted that we had stayed at home. "We didn't go anywhere last weekend!" she said.
    I hope this is helpful,

    Petra
