'G' before a consonant is almost always hard g /g/ ghost, grass, glass
BUT in gnostic, gneiss, the 'g' is silent.

'G' before 'a', 'o', 'u', is almost always hard: gape, gopher. gutter
    BUT gaol,

    'G' before 'e', 'i' can be either.
hard - get, geese, gilt, giggle
soft /dz/ - Gerry, germ, George, gerbil, giraffe, gin, ginger

So, there is no easy rule.
