    Dear pete:

    'That's the way it goes.'

In general, it means, 'That's how life is.' or 'There's no use crying over spilt milk.' The expression is often delivered as a sort of 'cold comfort' to oneself or others:
'Oh, no! We walked all the way here to find the restaurant closing just as we arrived. Oh, well, that's the way it goes.'
Another expression people use in the same way is 'that's the way the cookie crumbles.'

    Best wishes,

    Petra
