Question Help requested concerning anaphoric reference

What does "there" in the following sentences refer to?
They looked for their friend in the forest. And there atop a tall bael tree was their astrologer friend, sitting tight.
Is the underlined word just an introductory "there"? Or does it refer to something? Please help me.

Smile Re: Help requested concerning anaphoric reference

I think "there" is just referring to the tall tree one of the friends is sitting on.

I agree. It refers to a place...atop a tall bael tree.
