    Smile have to go some

That Sunday turned out to be the dreariest one on record.
And it had to go some to pass a handful of others he could recall.

Hi! What does the underlined sentence mean? Please help!
(To "him" Sundays are so dreary these days.)

'some' is an understatement. It means that it had to go a long way, be really bad in order to surpass the second worse one. So what it does is makes that Sunday [the dreariest one] far and beyond all the other dreary Sundays.
