    pronouncing "statistics"

There are three 'T's in this word. Which one(s) should be pronounced like 'D'?

    Thanks.

I think this word is somewhat of a tongue-twister, at least for me it is. I teach a course in statistics, and I stop and think each and every time I have to pronounce this word.

I don't think any of the "t's" are pronounced like "d's" -- or at least not as much as in (for example) 'butter."

I pretty much say stə TISS ticks

Anne's right. All three are solid t sounds. The second t, although it is sandwiched between vowel sounds, is not a flap—that softer sound that's not quite /t/ and not quite /d/ that Americans frequently use for t's and d's that appear between vowel sounds. The flap is responsible for making badder and batter sound exactly the same in American English. I don't have any formal training in linguistics, but I suspect the reason the flap doesn't apply to the second t in the word statistics is because it comes at the beginning of a stressed syllable.

The first and third t's are still pronounced /t/, even though they are preceded by s. As the /s/ releases some of the air in your mouth, the following /t/ becomes slightly less explosive; however, it doesn't make it a d sound.
