    Arrow referendum

Can I say "they are going to hold a referendum to choose the candidate",
with regard to choosing candidates for a competition?
    ex: a reality tv show

    Thanks in advance!

    Re: referendum

No, that's just a vote. A referendum is putting a political decision to the people that would normally be handled by the government.

    Re: referendum

I'm a bit confused about "to choose the candidate". Don't people normally choose a president, contestant or something like that (out of the candidates),do they? Or this means that this is a "candidate who'll run for (let's say) presidency" choosing stage and there will be a final election in which the chosen candidate going to participate.

    Re: referendum

It's ambiguous, you're right. Context tells us which is more likely. For example, the Americans don't go to the polls as a nation to choose which people in each of the 2 big parties can be candidates. They choose from the last 2 candidates.
