    She must've peaked early.

    "I tried to teach her
    how to be cool.

    - Jessica was cool?
    - She must've peaked early."

I don't understand this part "peaked early."

"Peaking early" means to come into the prime of your life when you are young. It means that your best years happened in your teens.

This is not necessarily a good thing; peaking early suggests that it's all going to be downhill from there. A person who finds at age 25 that her best years are behind her may wish she had not peaked early.

A person may be considered to have a "prime of his life" -- the age when he is at his best.

Children gradually work up to their "prime," slowly gathering judgment, wisdom, experience, education and so on until, as adults, they blossom -- they come into the maximum display of their potential.

This could refer to their executive power in the corporation they work for, their lifetime income curve, their athletic talent, their beauty, their acting ability or singing voice ... whatever it is that is the best thing about them.

Frank Sinatra's singing voice "peaked" in his 30s. Before that, it was too young and raw. In his 30s it was mellow and rich, but later in life he could not hit the notes as well, and his vocal chords had roughened.

Albert Einstein peaked in 1905 with his Special Theory of Relativity. Even though he lived for fifty more years and published many scientific papers in that time, the greatest achievement of his life occurred when he was only 26 years old.

(It is typical of physicists to peak early. Most of the important work in physics throughout history has been done by men not out of their 20s -- and sometimes not IN them yet! There is a saying among physicists that if you haven't made some fabulous discovery by the time you are 30, you never will.)

Heavyweight boxer Joe Frasier peaked with his defeat of Mohammad Ali in Madison Square Garden in "The Fight of the Century" in 1971. Frasier's career never again reached this level of glory.

The famous American folk artist Grandma Moses peaked LATE! Her paintings were not recognized until she was 101 years old, after she had lived an obscure life for the first 100 years.

On the other hand, child star Shirley Temple peaked really early. She was amazingly adorable as a little kid, but she had no movie star potential after that.
