    Cool get beat out

In the following sentence, please, what's the meaning of "get beat out"?

"He, a huge fan of the novelist, got beat out when he tried to buy the rights"

May it mean "He got disappointed because he couldn't buy the rights?

    Thanks

    Hi!

It means that he was not the only person trying (competing) to buy the rights. As a result he was beaten out by the person who bought the rights.
