    Before the late 17th century

Before the late 17th century, it ______immoral for women to appear on stage, and as such, males, usually adolescents, _____ female roles.

    A) is considered / would have played
    B) was being considered / should be playing
    C) was considered / would play
    D) had been considered / played
    E) could be considered / might have played

Why is the key C, why not D?

Re: Before the late 17th century

    D) suggests that the thinking on women on stage changed totally and men completely stopped playing female roles, while c) allows for a more gradual change IMO.
