    stay; jeans; only

    Dear teachers,

I have two questions to ask:

    No.1
    My paper remains unfinished.
Can I replace "remains" with "stays"?

    No.2
(Context: a farmer's wife told a reporter their children left their farm and went to work in cities. Those who stayed on the farms were old people)
They (their children) went away as soon as we could afford to buy jeans for them.
Does "afford jeans" mean they were so poor that they could not afford jeans for their children?

Looking foward to hearing from you.
    Thank you in advance.

Yes, but the meaning changes to one where the intent is to leave the paper unfinished.

My paper remains unfinished and it will stay unfinished.

I can't say for sure but I don't think they meant it literally. It t might have been said a bit tongue in cheek, Jiang, to relate that they were hurting and that the kids were eager to leave.
