    He .......... here long, but he .......... already.......... an impression on the staff.

    A) isn't working / is / making
    B) didn't work / was / made
    C) hasn't been working / has / made
    D) won't work/will / make
    E) hadn't worked / has / made


    Could you explain me why the key is C, why not E?

    Because by using the past perfect "hadn't worked", you are saying that he no longer works here, which doesn't fit with the rest of the sentence.
