    Hi,

I am studying for an MA.

    I am studying for MA.

Is an article required before MA? If yes why and if no why?

There is a rule that we dont add an article before proper nouns.

And MA can be a proper noun as well, thus we wont add an article.

    Am I correct?

    • He's getting his MA.
    • She's studying for her MA.
    • How much is an MA?
    • How many years do you have to study for an MA?
    • Is an MA necessary for the position available?
    • What's the difference between an MA and an MBA?
    • You say you have an MA, is that right?
    • Where can I apply for an MA scholarship?

So how do we defferenciate between MA as a proper noun and MA as a countable noun?

How do we know when to add an article before MA and when not to add an article before MA (as in the case of example no 1 and example no 2).

/M/ is a consonant sound, so why do we use "an" and not "a"..?

The rule is "an" before a consonant sound, not a consonant letter. The letter M has a vowel-initial pronunciation.

Well if /M/ has a initial vowel pronunciation, then do we say a mother or an mother..?

    He has a mother.
    or
    He has an mother.
